Horton Park

Horton Park is not, perhaps, the most spectacular place in the state, but it is a favorite place to spend time and appreciate nature in the city. Horton Park has signage describing it as a “mini-arboretum,” and features over two dozen varieties of trees in its relatively small two-block area. My daughters have dubbed it, “the park with the trees,” and enjoy collecting the various leaves and pine cones. Some of my favorite specimens are a stand of quaking aspen, a couple of twisty Scotch pines, a big sugar maple, lovely Japanese tree lilacs, and iconic white pines. Many of the trees have identification signs describing their names and characteristics. Thanks to the wide range of trees present, Horton Park is a great place to observe the changing seasons, as all the different trees put out leaves and flowers, grow fruit and seeds, and change into autumn color. Even in the winter, the different patterns of branches and twigs against the sky are strikingly beautiful.
