Interstate Park

Interstate State Park, despite its annoying and self-contradictory name, is one of the gems of the Minnesota State Parks system. It’s the park so fun they couldn’t keep it in one state: the natural area is split across the St. Croix River, with part of the park in Wisconsin. And the people who run the park make sure it’s interesting enough for two states.

The park is famous for its potholes. Far from the irritating variety of pothole we encounter in the road daily, this kind of pothole is a wonder of nature. They’re the result of rocks of various sizes getting lodged into the cliffs, rolling around, and creating massive holes over thousands of years. The largest potholes run with a depth several times taller than the average human. These holes are in the midst of a giant green space with moss-covered rock formations and other picture-perfect spots.

Rock climbing is available to those who show up, as are boating, a nature center, several trails, and a volleyball area. The park is free to enter on foot or bike, and campgrounds are fairly inexpensive. Visitors can break to visit the town of Taylors Falls, a nice place to stop for ice cream or check out historic buildings, like a library built before the Civil War. St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin is also nearby, as is the Frontenac Sculpture Garden, a unique find in the area.

My only major complaint is that the park can get somewhat crowded, between campers, local visitors, and tour groups. But that’s nothing more than a testament to the park’s deserved popularity. Interstate remains the perfect Metro day trip or weekend getaway.
