Crookston: A Legacy Destination

Awarded a Legacy Destination in 2011 by Conservation Minnesota and Minnesota Citizens for the Arts.

Several locations and organizations in the area have received Clean Water, Land, and Legacy funding.

Thanks to the Outdoor Heritage Fund,

  •  Glacial Ridge National Wildlife Refuge had prairie and wetlands restored through funding received by The Nature Conservancy and Minnesota DNR.

Thanks to the Clean Water Fund,

  • The City of Crookston sealed five wells in and near the city.
  • Red Lake Watershed District completed an assesment of the runoff and tributaries into the Red Lake.

Thanks to the Parks & Trails Fund,

  •  Castle Park developed 28 camping sites, a river recreation area with boating and fishing, a nature-based playground, and a picnic shelter.

Thanks to the Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund,

  • The University of Minnesota- Crookston sponsored artists for an annual Cinco de Mayo celebration.
  • The St. Peter Parish restored the Church of St. Peter, a nationally registered historic site.
  • Crookston Area Chamber of Commerce hosted festivals like OxCart Days and the Cornstalk Jamboree.
  • The city studied the feasability of converting the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception into an arts center.
  • Crookston Public Schools brought in several resident artists.
